Analyzing the Dragon Ball games. Give your personal opinion.

Post by KwB » Thu Dec 29, 2011 4:02 pm

Hey guys !! I'm huge Dragon Ball fan and this is just for the guys of Bandai Namco and interested readers, if they read this of course .. a little summary of the "ups and downs" of Dragon Ball Series. I analyzed passed games and came to a conclusion.

Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and 3 were great because of the great combos you could make, very detailed and character dependent. One negative point was that you couldn't break some enemy combos and just get non-stop hits. The freedom you had was amazing and the character list was a real markpoint in the DBZ game series.

Burst Limit was a step down but with improved graphics.

The fighting ( read combo ) system in Raging Blast 1- 2 was just fine. The super attacks which you would take hit from the enemy, dodge it and respond with a super attack ( f.e. Bojack or Android 13 ) were just awesome !! The combos were a little off but still ok, better than BT3 and still character dependent combos. Character list in Raging Blast was AMAZING, I think personally that Raging Blast 2 had the best character list of all DBZ games !! The added Super Attack slots were also a step forward.

Ultimate Tenkaichi is very nice, you guys made a huge step forward with the graphics ( a true orgasm for DBZ fans :p ).. in the beginning .. after playing a couple of hours, it's a constant replay. The character list is fine, not a disaster but could have been a lot better. Great thing about adding the character creator although partly damaging the true DBZ image ! The combo system is awesome ( great realistic anime scenes ) but not enough detail and like I said repeating itself every time ( with every single character .. ). Freedom seems a little "jailed" and the fact that you can't teleport behind the enemy when he attacks you or when you attack him, is a real bummer.

Try not to make it quick quick, because you really notice that you guys rushed to make the game on time. But isn't it better to make the fans wait and making them happier with a good DBZ game and take some more time to develop a DBZ game. I read the forum and a lot of people are having the same ideas here, true DBZ fans, the ones that by the way only buy the games you make. One thing I'm thankful for is that you added the real anime graphics to the game and didn't kept it like RB2.

But I would have to say that UT has some great new ideas like the destructing areas, the taking-a-beam system and the thought of letting some attacks just be casual luck.

Now I didn't say anything about the story mode of the games because personally it is the least I care about in a DBZ game. BT3 and RB2's story mode was just fine. The flying around the world is old school and needs some upgrades ( for me it just can dissapear ). Was it me or did you always fly to the next fight directly ?? The boss system in UT can be fun but personally not necessary. I've seen the series already a lot of times, so I know exactly was is going to happen, for me it is really not important to make a good story mode ( it should be an extra in the game and not the main ), but what do you guys think about it ???

Thanks Namco Bandai for bringing us DBZ to our consoles,

gotta comment on BT3.. I always made my roommates mad when I "walked through" special attacks.. esp Gogeta's BBK.. how you hop up real quick from a knock down right as they do a move in your face and you "slap it away" and just wail on them....

But anyway..

I have to agree with 98% of what you said. I'd rather wait for gold than pay for Silver in Gold's clothing if you catch my drift. I wouldn't mind paying 60$ if it's going to be mind blowing, as i'm sure most gamers would agree.

IMO UT Pro's:

EVERYTHING has a clash!!
Everything can be destroyed
Everything is PEW PEW SMACK SMACK
You don't have to be a grand master to inflict some hurt, just mash some buttons

Con's:
Repetitive and Difficult AI
Beginners aren't welcome in this game in Hero Mode

The story mode should, like you said, be a secondary feature. Just about everyone playing this game has watched the series or read the manga. It should be linear and honestly focus on expanding Hero mode and adding a BUTTLOAD more features.

Good summary all around. :D

Edit:
Forgot a CON:

This game can do serious damage to your controller. I would honestly suggest a rapid fire controller. I played for a total of 15 hours in the last 3 days and i've noticed the buttons on my brand new MS Licensed controller is starting to wear out REALLY quickly. I'm seriously debating on buying a new one and junking the one ive been using.. /sadface

I'm somewhat amazed the UT has as many fans as it seems to have on this forum. I'm generally one of the bigger Dragon Ball apologists I know, willing to wink off something others find lousy simply because I love the franchise. However, no matter how hard I tried to like Ultimate Tenkaichi, I returned it soon after getting it. I was a late comer to the Tenkaichi style games that Spike made, but by 3 was hooked on them. Raging Blast 1 and 2 I thought were great forwards steps on them, even if they sacrificed the deeper character roster and giant characters I enjoyed. I was very excited about Ultimate Tenkaichi, but when I get it was horrified that the rich fighting system I enjoyed from Raging Blast had been replaced with rock paper scissors and QTE's, and the roster was absolutely laughable. I wondered if the sacrifices to gameplay were made for the benefit of the character creator, but that apparently sucked too. Basically Ultimate Tenkaichi took out what I found exciting about the Tenkaichi series (deep character roster, free ranging movement, etc) and turned the game into something cool to look at but not fun to play. After unlocking everything and finding I the game wasn't growing on me, I sold it back and went back to RB2, which I was then able to figure out some new combos that had eluded me before.

In all, in my opinion Spike has all the pieces for the perfect DBZ fighter, but they haven't put them together quite yet. The Dragon Ball game I would love to see would be built pretty much off Raging Blast 2 and include elements from BT3 and the first RB. So for me, the ideal DBZ game would be:

- The graphics Raging Blast 1 (I thought the coloring was more similar to the anime)
- Gameplay and character customization of Raging Blast 2
- Model Viewer from Raging Blast 1
- Character select from Raging Blast 1 (it is frustrating in 2 having to remember which costume is which by the number, but this is a small gripe)
- Return of Arcade Mode (It was missing in RB2 and was a nice alternative to picking enemies at random in a battle or going through the tournaments)
- Combination of the character rosters from Budokai Tenkaichi 3 and Raging Blast 2 (I could stand to NOT have the GT characters in there, but other people like GT, so what the ****)
- Bring back the giant characters/transformations (they added a dimension to the gameplay I don't find in many other fighters and found fighting them in UT to be highly unfulfilling. I found it far more fun to fly around Oozaru Vegeta or Hildegarn having to pummel the **** out of them by hand than to win a QTE to get past them)
- Giant destruction scenes similar to Budokai 3/Infinite World (UT had some of these, but they were inconsistent. Basically make it so if ye hit with yer ultimate attack, have an animation of a mushroom cloud viewed from space or beam attack flying off the planet and afterwards it takes the map to whatever devastated landscape ye have)
- Last little thing, Super Dragon Fist for Super Saiyan 3 Goku.

Indeed Projecteulogy, better wait for Gold than pay for SIlver in Gold's clothing. Yes, I have to agree with the clashing and the destroying the world !
I can believe it about your controller while every time you get kicked away, you have to crush your fingers (due to the button mashing) on hoping to teleport behind the enemy ...

Yes YagyuKengo, you are right I also tried to keep it playing but I don't know it didn't hook me up like the last games ... To be honest I also bought Raging Blast 2 again to enjoy the good old Tenkaichi System. Man, I had also too high hopes for UT !! I guess we are not the only ones ..

They cut amazingly much characters on UT ! I guess 99 % of the combo system was changed due to the Character Creator system, why would they else (all of the sudden) implement an easy-to-use combo system and take away so many options ( Grabbing, teleport, hard defense, little combo during rush, free ranging movement, ... ) ??

I agree with your opinion about the Raging Blast 1 look while RB2 wasn't so anime-like. The GT characters, it wouldn't bother me for NOT having them either, although indeed a lot of people like them but always fun to have them incorporated ! The big characters in BT3 were awesome, make them return !!

Haha, was very weird that Super Saiyan 3 Goku had a Kamehameha for Ultimate Attack .. ?!

But whatever, let's hope to hear what the others think about it ..

The Budokai series was at the moment one of the best !! I had such a great time, oh man when Budokai 2 was announced on Gamecube back then, then budokai 3 was sadly enough not announced and that was a bummer because it was the best of all three !! Then Tenkaichi came out and revolutionized the whole gameplay !! ^^ I personally find Tenkaichi better then Budokai but when I play it back now, 'cause I'm still down from Ultimate Tenkaichi, it lacks graphics which back then were amazing ..

:) THE MOST IMPORTANT ASSPECTS OF DBZ GAMES FOR ME!
• First: The Gameplay. No one wanted the button mashing, and confusing BS that we got for UT. It should be the same graphics but like burst limit were you can knock your opponent into the sky. Also bigger space and giants characters to use wouldn’t hurt.
• Second: Multiplayer. It wraps up the gameplay. I just want a dbz game where I can play one game with three other people. They did it against cell. Some 1 on 2, 1 on 3, 2 on 2, or 1 on 1 action.
• Finally (Since it was in UT): Character creation (Hero Mode). All needs to go into it if they’re going to put that back into a game. For instance, appearance, last time everyone look like triplets. More eyes, ears, nose. Maybe you could have limbs and hair partly made of fire, ice, air or earth. More attire. Masks, Fusion clothes, Metal Suits, Helmets, and Capes. Change the way you move around, jetpack, (flying, some people can’t fly) walk or run, move around on fire, ice, earth, water, or lightning. Heat Blast, Iceman, Terra, Hydro Man, and The Flash can. Body mass needs to be accounted for. People want stronger, fatter, Taller, and shorter characters. They could add a move maker (finishers). And very important, the transformations. You should be able to make your hero your way. If I want a saiyan with Black eyes, long blue hair, tan skin, and lightning aura. That’s my business. They should add races and genders. Saiyans, Humans, Android, Animal, Arconian, Arlian, Basian, Changeling, Dark Creature, Dragons, Kaio (Kai)(king ,west, east, north, south, grand), Kaioshin, Kanassan, Konackian, Makyan, Saibaman, Tuffle, Yardrats, Namekians , Majins, Baby-like, Fusions, Giants, Robots, and Freiza’s race. There has to be a chick version in the next one. Spikes, eyes, arms, laser, or whatever could pour out your character. You paid for it you should be able to experiment with it.
• Don’t shoot down my idea it’s an opinion. I know that will take a long process to make that amazing game. If you don’t think so I HAVE TWO WORDS FOR YOU ======= SUCK IT :) .

I agree, we are in the tech age where you could easily make a truly massive stage as a fight stage, simply look at games such as red dead redemption, very small loading to get A TRULY MASSIVE LANDSCAPE, now tell my why they cant do that in next dbz game, they wont even need to worry about npc's and other stuff, just make it destructable with UT graphics and some decent phyics(think cryengine), raging blast 2 controls and the return or updates of many of the abillities and moves from Budokai tenkaichi 3 and believe Namco, you will have a true winner, and also improve overall physics like when a blast hits water it splits or something, its not impossible, mario on the wii had amazing water physics....and THATS ON THE WIII( a glorified gamcube), or how a straying big bang into the sky should split the clouds.Better sound as well would be great, and please take your time, we dont want rushed crappy piece of work that "could" have been great, we want great. The character creator from UT great idea, just needs more races i.e majin, namek e.t.c and more character parts, weight etc. Thankyou
