MY FAMILY HAS HAD 3 HP'S. THE DESKTOP WAS CRAP, the one laptop was okay actually, AND THEN I HAVE TO RETURN TWO!!!!! WTFFFFFFFFFF

if the compaq brand is still made separately from HP brand then they might still be ok. but when my old company purchased 170 business class machines and 3 were dead out of the box and 4 more were dead within a month i gave up on them.

ibm didnt break.

ive never owned one for personal use but the machines we had at my old job were the only ones we didnt have to send out for service all the time. the issues we had with them was making them xp compatible, wich im assuming you wont be trying to do.

other than that i currently own a 5 year old compaq wich has been loved and abused and refuses to die. but then it was bought before HP started changing compaq.

then i have a toshiba gaming rig. it never worked right but it was a display model from bestbuy. but i got it for less than half price so its all good.
a toshiba netbook wich has held up pretty well for its time with me in army and its still my preferred work machine. cant play HD video on it though.

its been my experience that dell will make a machine that will crap out in less than 2 years or it will be immortal.

Though my last one was built like a tank and moved/processed/loaded/etc'd just as fast as one.
