Licensing & IP Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY
The Licensing & Intellectual Property Specialist will be a part of the NAMCO BANDAI Games America legal department and will be responsible for coordinating and maintaining the company's North American licensing portfolio, maintaining licensing and vendor agreements and music licenses, drafting and reviewing agreements, including but not limited to NDA’s, permission requests, etc., keeping the Legal Counsel apprised of new and pending matters, and collaborating with colleagues in the company, across the various domestic group companies, the Global IP Strategy group in Japan, and outside parties.  Ideal candidate must be a team player, passionate about brands and IP protection, have the ability to adapt to current and future responsibilities, as well as the willingness to expand responsibilities as needed. This position will report to the Sr. Director, Legal and Business Affairs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administer licensing out programs for the company’s brands such as PAC-MAN, GALAGA, TEKKEN, and SOULCALIBUR, including liaising with third parties interested in licensing the company’s brands
  • Prepare proposals for product related contracts
  • Manage licensing approval, compliance, and administration
  • Analyze royalty payments from licensees
  • Negotiate with potential licensees
  • Act as liaison with existing licensees
  • Liaise with Japan’s Global IP Group
  • Oversee permissions to use the company’s brands by third parties for promotional value, such as in television programs, movies, books, and the Internet, including liaising with third parties seeking such permissions
  • Review scripts and other materials, authenticating materials; and drafting permission letters
  • Enforcement of the company's brands on the Internet
  • Handle cease and desist demands, take down notices, and investigating of third party use of marks
  • Maintain and draft vendor and music agreements
  • Assist the legal department with general administrative support
  • Perform internet research projects and other special projects as needed

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE 

  • 3-5 years of experience working with brand licensing and/or intellectual property
  • General understanding of product marketing, distribution, contracts, royalty structures, licensing transactions, and negotiation
  • Law degree or paralegal certificate
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Solid technology skills, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel, and Internet
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills including the ability to effectively work with different personalities and styles of various departments and with 3rd parties
  • Strong research skills
  • Superior organizational and project management skills, attention to detail, and ability to proactively manage time and be effective at trouble-shooting
  • A commitment to supporting company and legal department priorities and initiatives (including without limitation diversity and client education)
  • Successful candidates must be self-motivated, and be able to pursue projects to completion with a minimum of input or direction, take creative initiative in creating and improving work processes and work effectively on a variety of simultaneously active matters in a fast-paced environment
  • Assume greater responsibilities as circumstances dictate
  • Bilingual, English/Japanese preferred but not required.
